Algorithms for separable nonlinear least squares with application to modelling time-resolved spectra

چکیده
The multiexponential analysis problem of fitting kinetic models to timeresolved spectra is often solved using gradient-based algorithms that treat the spectral parameters as conditionally linear. We make a comparison of the two most-applied such algorithms, alternating least squares and variable projection. A numerical study examines computational efficiency and linear approximation standard error estimates. A new derivation of the Fisher information matrix under the full Golub-Pereyra gradient allows a numerical comparison of parameter precision under variable projection variants. Under the criteria of efficiency, quality of standard error estimates and parameter precision, we conclude that the Kaufman variable projection technique performs well, while techniques based on alternating least squares have significant disadvantages for application in the problem domain.

Application of Genetic Algorithms for Pixel Selection in MIA-QSAR Studies on Anti-HIV HEPT Analogues for New Design Derivatives
Quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) analysis has been carried out with a series of 107 anti-HIV HEPT compounds with antiviral activity, which was performed by chemometrics methods. Bi-dimensional images were used to calculate some pixels and multivariate image analysis was applied to QSAR modelling of the anti-HIV potential of HEPT analogues by means of multivariate calibration,...

متن کاملAn Efficient Iterative Approach for Large-Scale Separable Nonlinear Inverse Problems
This paper considers an efficient iterative approach to solve separable nonlinear least squares problems that arise in large scale inverse problems. A variable projection GaussNewton method is used to solve the nonlinear least squares problem, and Tikhonov regularization is incorporated using an iterative Lanczos hybrid scheme. Regularization parameters are chosen automatically using a weighted...
متن کاملA Least Squares Approach to Estimating the Average Reservoir Pressure
Least squares method (LSM) is an accurate and rapid method for solving some analytical and numerical problems. This method can be used to estimate the average reservoir pressure in well test analysis. In fact, it may be employed to estimate parameters such as permeability (k) and pore volume (Vp). Regarding this point, buildup, drawdown, late transient test data, modified Muskat method, interfe...
متن کاملKOALA: a program for the processing and decomposition of transient spectra.
Extracting meaningful kinetic traces from time-resolved absorption spectra is a non-trivial task, particularly for solution phase spectra where solvent interactions can substantially broaden and shift the transition frequencies. Typically, each spectrum is composed of signal from a number of molecular species (e.g., excited states, intermediate complexes, product species) with overlapping spect...
